BLUEFISH (Pomatomus saltatrix)

A good size bluefish caught with Captain Ed Stonich (+757-589-5689) www.thesouthernsportsman.net

This 8.1 kg - 19 lb bluefish was caught by Nebot Santos on a Savegear lure while beach casting in Oman.

Found in all Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean and Black Seas, in temperate to tropical waters although sporadic in occurrence and location. The bluefish is one of only 3 species of the family Pomatomidae. The voracious bluefish richly deserves the nicknames “marine piranha” and”chopper” because it swims in large schools through shoals of bait fish, slashing and destroying everything in its path. They will bite anything, including sometimes unlucky swimmers. Bluefish can easily inflict serious wounds even when the fish is out of water; as many a careless fisherman has learned.
